Gravel Driveway Guide: Layers, Depth & Quantity

A driveway that lasts is not one thick pile of gravel — it is three compacted layers of different stone sizes, 8–12 inches deep in total. Built that way, a gravel drive carries daily car traffic for a decade with only occasional top-ups. Here is the standard build-up, the math for ordering, and the mistakes that cause ruts and mud.

The three-layer build-up

How much to order

Work layer by layer: area in square feet × depth in feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards, and crushed stone runs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. For a typical 12-foot-wide residential drive, the full build-up works out to roughly 0.33 cubic yards (about half a ton) per running foot. Order the sub-base and base with a few percent to spare: some of the first load always presses into the subgrade during compaction, and short second deliveries carry the same flat delivery fee as full ones.

Plan on dragging or raking the surface level once or twice a year and adding a fresh 1–2 inch lift of surface stone every 2–4 years depending on traffic. Potholes are best fixed by cutting the edges square, filling with crusher run, and compacting — just raking loose stone into a hole brings it back after the next rain.

How much gravel do I need for a 50-foot driveway?

A 50 ft × 12 ft driveway is 600 sq ft. At the full 9-inch three-layer build-up that is about 16.7 cubic yards, or roughly 23 tons. A 2-inch top-up of the surface layer alone is about 3.7 cubic yards (5 tons).

Can I skip the layers and just spread one kind of gravel?

You can, but a single 3–4 inch lift of one stone size ruts quickly, especially on soft or clay soil. If budget forces a single product, crusher run compacted in two lifts is the best compromise — but the three-layer build lasts years longer.

Do I need landscape fabric under a gravel driveway?

On clay or frequently wet ground, a woven geotextile between soil and the first stone layer stops the rock from being pushed down into mud and roughly doubles the life of the base. On well-drained sandy soil it is optional.

Why is my gravel driveway always muddy or rutted?

Almost always one of three causes: no crowned profile (water sits instead of shedding), rounded pea gravel used instead of angular crushed stone (it never locks together), or gravel laid straight on topsoil without a compacted base.
