How Thick Should a Concrete Slab Be?

For most residential work the answer is 4 inches for foot traffic and 5–6 inches wherever vehicles drive or park. Thickness is the single biggest driver of both slab strength and material cost, so it pays to get it right before you use the concrete calculator. Here is the standard guidance, use by use.

Why 4 inches became the residential standard

A 4-inch slab poured from ordinary 3,000–4,000 psi ready-mix comfortably carries foot traffic, patio furniture, and passenger cars when it sits on a properly compacted base. Going thinner saves surprisingly little — concrete volume scales linearly, so a 3.5-inch pour saves only about 12% of material — while cutting the slab's load capacity and its tolerance for subgrade imperfections dramatically. That trade is why nearly every residential spec you'll see starts at a nominal 4 inches.

The real-world caveat: "4 inches" means 4 inches everywhere, not just at the edges of the form. Low spots in a lazily graded base quietly eat concrete and create thin, crack-prone zones. Grade and compact the base flat, and check depth at the middle of the form, not just the sides.

When to step up to 5 or 6 inches

Move up whenever wheels are involved. Vehicle axle loads concentrate force in small patches, and slab load capacity rises roughly with the square of thickness — a 6-inch slab is not 50% stronger than a 4-inch slab, it is closer to twice as strong in bending. Driveways serving pickups, trailers, or motorhomes, and garage bays with lifts or machinery, are the classic 6-inch cases. Thickened edges (8–12 inches around the perimeter) are a common detail for driveways in cold climates and for slabs supporting walls.

Reinforcement: mesh, rebar, or fiber?

Whatever you choose, control joints matter more than most DIYers expect: saw or tool joints to a depth of one quarter of the slab thickness, spaced (in feet) at roughly two to three times the thickness in inches — so an 4-inch slab gets joints every 8–12 feet.

The base under the slab

Slabs rarely fail because the concrete was weak; they fail because the ground under them moved. Strip topsoil, compact the subgrade, then add and compact 4 inches of crushed stone (4–8 inches for driveways or clay soils). Is 3 inches of concrete enough for a patio?

It can technically work over a perfectly compacted base, but it leaves almost no margin for error and most concrete finishers will not warranty it. The industry-standard 4 inches costs only about a third more material and is far more durable.

Do I need rebar in a 4-inch slab?

For patios and walkways, welded wire mesh or fiber-reinforced mix is generally sufficient — reinforcement there controls crack width rather than adding load capacity. For driveways 5 inches and thicker, #3 or #4 rebar on an 18–24 inch grid is the common recommendation.

How much does going from 4 to 6 inches increase the concrete needed?

Volume scales linearly with thickness, so a 6-inch slab needs exactly 50% more concrete than a 4-inch slab of the same footprint. A 10×20 ft driveway pad goes from about 2.5 to 3.7 cubic yards.

Does the gravel base count toward slab thickness?

No. The compacted gravel base (typically 4 inches for patios, 4–8 inches for driveways) sits under the slab and is measured separately. Your concrete order is based on the slab dimensions only — but never skip the base, since most slab failures start with poor subgrade.
